Homework 8

In this homework I have made a dock where our character can get down but the place where the dock is situated is a secured place. Therefore, I have made gates which sides away when the boat comes near the gate. Moreover, there is an automatic barrier gate which rotates on the y-axis and lets the boat pass through. For demonstration purposes scaling is also shown when the boat comes near one of the boxes. In my previous homework I did the animation of the obstacles having sharp tooth around the boxes swaying from side to side. This blend file contains all the types of animation location, scaling and rotation. I have restricted the area so now boat cannot fall off if it reaches the edge.

Boat going towards the dock which is protected by the gates and automatic barrier door.

Box scaling when boat comes near. This makes the obstacle bigger and boat has to go around the box to reach its destination.

Automatic barrier gate and sliding doors opening when the boat comes near these two objects.

This week I started building the island where our character will survive against the odds.I have started from the right hand side of the map. The name of the island is Hashima Island which is situated in Japan.

Below is the original map of Hashima Island, Japan -

Homework 7

1. Is the space in your game discrete or continuous?
Our game is continuous.

2 .How many dimensions does your space have?
Our game have three dimensions.

3. What are the boundaries of your space?
There will be boundaries around the island beyond which the character won't be able to go.

4. How many verbs do your players (characters) have? What are they?
Our player can walk, jump fight against enemies, climb, light fire, pick up ammunition/ health packs, drive a car and a boat, heal himself.

5. How many objects can each verb act on? What are these objects?
For the player to be able to walk we have roads, floors in the building, dock along the shore, grass/ground. Our player can fight against animals and/or people, weather. There are different kinds of weapons like gun, knife, axe and more to be added soon, player can climb on rooftops, poles to get a better perspective, obstacles and walls, fire can be lit up during night time, various ammunition will be there for the player to pickup, medical kit, first aid kit, bandages, medicines, abandoned cars of different varieties  and a boat for him/her to escape/ arrive on an island.

6. How many ways can players achieve their goals.
Player can find an exit point though various routed on the island. It depends on the path selected by the player.

7. How many subjects do the players control? What are these subjects?
Player can control the boat, car and the animals that get into his/her way.

8. How do side effects change constraints.
Side effects changes the ability to make the game challenging or easy depending on the actions taken by the user. For example - if the player decides to feed the animal which are not ferocious like dogs, cats etc, they can protect him against the other animals which will increase the players chances of surviving. Moreover, if the health of the player is low, he/she might not be able to break into the groceries or pharmacy store which might have a different consequence.

9. What are the operative actions in your game?
Our player can drive, run, jump, pick up weapons, climb, shoot etc.

10. What are the resultant actions in your game?
Player can break in the doors and windows by pushing heavy object or ramming a car into the doors, befriend or fight against the animals, light up fire to get better visibility at night.

11. What actions would you like your players to do that they cannot presently do? (based on your current knowledge of Blender)
I would like to make the combat scenes between the player and animals to be realistic, see them doing a hand to hand combat rather than just getting their health bar depleted when an animal runs into you.

12. What is the ultimate goal of your game?
Ultimate goal of the game is to escape from the island by surviving against the enemies, finding shelter and food.

13.Are there short and long term goals? What are they?
Short term goal is to find food, shelter by breaking into the grocery store, get health packs from the pharmacy store and befriend or fight against the animal. The long term goal is to find a way to escape from the island

14.How do you plan to make the game goals known and understood by the player?
To make the player understand the goal of this game,  we will add an intro- video which will explain the entire plot except for a few things. Also, we will add hints in the game so that the player can be on the track without getting lost.

15.What are the foundational rules of your game?
The player will have a limited health so he needs to survive before his health bar reaches zero. He can eat food and/or find health packs, take some rest to replenish his health.

16.How are these rules enforced?
The player won't be able to continue his game play experience once his health bar reaches zero.  Moreover, a player would be restricted to an island upto a certain extent so as to make him within the island and make the game more challenging.

17.Does your game develop real skills? What are they?
Yes, Since one needs how to navigate in an unknown place they will be able to update their navigational skills, how to do resource management, problem solving skills etc.

18.Does your game develop virtual skills? What are they?
Combat techniques of the player, driving and maneuvering skills, decision making skills and logical skills will be developed.

During this week I worked on how to restrict the player from getting out from an area and keep the player within the confined zones. As in our case the island needs to be restricted in most of the parts without the player realizing that there is any physical boundary present. I was also collecting various maps of Hashima Island and made a few buildings and the layout of the western part of the abandoned island.

Homework 6

In this blend file, I have added additional objects like trees and ramps. There is another obstacle which keeps on moving from side to side. This blend file demonstrates collision between two moving objects, ability to delete or add an object from the scene.Game controls are mentioned in the readme text file in the link provided below.

As I have mentioned in my previous posts that the main character have to find a way out of the island and escape on the boat while tackling against the obstacles, these objects used in the blend file would therefore be apt for our storyline. Also, there are a few boxes which disappears when the boat collides with it. These boxes are like collectables in the water body which will give you points / weapons or any useful item. Ramps helps you to overcome the obstacles and helps you reach the end faster.

Homework 5

Objects added - Boxes, Rocks and Poles

I have made a small game in which the player needs to navigate the boat to the finish line without colliding with the rocks or boxes. The fun element in this game is to avoid being hit by the rocks and the box since pressing Space-bar and Left Shift will make few of the rocks move either towards you or away from you.

We can add more elements in this game like a ramp so that the boat could jump from it and avoid various obstacles. Also, I would like to add a countdown timer so that it becomes more challenging.

Homework 4

Experience is the most crucial part of game play which makes the game worth playing. There are a few kinds of experience that I want the players playing our game should feel. It includes: Surprise, fear, betrayal, anger/frustration, excitement and triumph.

These experiences could be experienced by our player in many forms but I am going to list a few of them. Since the game plot is based in an abandoned city which is overrun by vegetation and animals, attacks by various animals out of nowhere could bring in the element of surprise. Due to ferocious animals and surviving in an abandoned city on an island without any aid will give an element of fear in the game.

There could be a situation in the beginning of the game that the character comes for a purpose to this island with another person, however, there arises a situation where the main character of our game is stuck (under debris of a building or in a pit) and need the help of the other person to get out of that situation but the other guy betrays and leaves him. Since the player needs to survive and have to collect first aid from the pharmacy in order to heal himself if he is wounded or is infected, blocked doors or windows which could prevent him from entering the pharmacy building could lead to frustrations/anger.

Excitement can come by collecting special hidden items which could help them for surviving and getting out of the situation. Since the player has to leave the island by surviving against the odds so as to complete the game will that will give him triumph/accomplished feeling.

Surprises in the game comes from the fact that the main character would be attacked by animals coming out of no where/ sneaking from behind. Betrayal is another form of a surprise to the player since it will be unexpected. Another in game hidden objects could surprise the player which will be very useful for escape from the situation in which the player would be at that particular time.

Since the player have the ability to drive any abandoned car and can roam across the island would bring in some fun element to the game. Also, they can use the car to break selected locked or blocked doors of a building which they want to access. Ability to shoot down most of the things in the game with weapons. The player can kill animals and light up fire and can roast the animal on that, if it's raw or uncooked it could deteriorate his health.

The elements of this game and our expectations what the players is suppossed to do is to survive on an abandoned island tackling thorough various objects, animals, finding food/shelter, getting medical aid by breaking in into the medical stores, complete objectives of this game and finding a way to escape the island.

Last week I started looking out for more objects which might be helpful and relevant to our game.I downloaded rocks, boxes so that I can create some obstacles when a player navigate in the river. Moreover, I implemented the parenting techniques which was taught in the class and thus was able to parent a camera around the object so that we can get a third person's view. I also started watching the video tutorials of Blender so that I am able to take the advantage of the tools which I am not aware of.

Homework 2

1) When and where did you meet?
Me and my teammates met on Friday (5th September, 2014) in the classroom and on Tuesday (9th September, 2014) in the Majors Lab.

2) What did you discuss?
We discussed about the game ideas, what will be the genre of our game, what will be the plot, what kinds of characters to include in the game and how can the game be fun and interesting to the player.

3) Did you take notes? Why? Why not?
Yes we took the notes as it would be easier to remember the ideas that were discussed during our conversation.

4) Did you transfer the contents of the discuss to the computer?
No, we haven't transferred the contents of our discussion to the computer yet but we will be shortly putting up notes on Google Drive so that all of can contribute the ideas and share them at the same time.

5) Did you discuss the game document?
No, we didn't discuss about the game document since this meeting was solely set up to discuss what all to include in our game and give it an initial start.

6) Did you pick a team leader. Why? Who is it?
We haven't picked up a team leader but most probably it will be Ashleigh Davis.

7) Please describe briefly some initial ideas regarding the game you plan on developing.
Initially we planned to develop a horror simulation game where a character needs to go through a maze in a haunted house tackling against different kinds of creatures and obstacles. Then we thought of making a third person action adventure survival game where a character needs to survive against the odds in an abandoned city on an island/plains. Finding shelter, food, completing objectives and getting medical aid, etc are a part of the game play experience which we discussed.  We are still figuring out the objective of the character and how the character gets into this kind of situation.

8) State on your blog the contributions you, the individual, made towards the team game in the last week.
I along with my team members brainstormed about the game concepts and ideas. I had this idea of developing an action adventure game in an abandoned city on an island where a player needs to survive against the odds. The obstacles in the game will be ferocious animals, natural calamities in the form of thunderstorms, floods, earthquakes and falling trees.
